When looking at a course in your Client Account, you can see that a package will have a version number, something like:
3.1.4
This is a semantic versioning scheme that represents: PLATFORM.MINOR.PATCH
The PLATFORM version number is updated when there is a significant change to all courses in the catalog. Historically, these have been:
- v1.0.0 - The original "Classic" look and feel
- v2.0.0 - The new responsive and accessible "Flex" look and feel
- v3.0.0 - Move to LTI
- v4.0.0 - Every course updated with embedded Teacher Resources
The MINOR version number would be for an update to a course like adding new content to satisfy a new state standard, or other enhancements of an existing course.
The PATCH version number would reflect when something minor like updating a mistaken quiz question, or correcting a spelling error in a discussion question. Oftentimes you can make these fixes to your already installed course package by following the instructions on the update notification
If a course is heavily refreshed or rewritten, it is given a whole new EDL Course code (for example, EDL014 Digital Photography was retired and replaced by the completely rewritten EDL116 Digital Photography 1a).
Most small updates to courses are automatically distributed to your LMS via the LTI protocol. But when it comes to quiz questions, dropboxes, and discussion questions, these require a new package or manual implementation on your end.
Note: this is only applicable to downloadable packages (eg. Blackboard, Canvas, D2L, Moodle, etc). If you are using our hosted Buzz service, we update the courses in place for your convenience. In the case of a course re-release, we will roll that course out under a new courseID and retire the older courseID.
